Dr. Stephen Shpeen Obituary


Voorhees, New Jersey 
Dr. Stephen Shpeen died on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at his home in Voorhees surrounded by his loving family after a courageous and valiant struggle with ALS.
The eldest child of the late Judith and Dr. Harold Shpeen, he was a lifelong resident of Southern New Jersey.
After graduating from Dickinson College where he was Captain of the soccer team, he earned a master’s degree in Human Physiology from Farleigh Dickinson University and his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from the University of Pennsylvania followed by his training specializing in Endodontics from Temple University Dental School.  For many years, Dr. Shpeen was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School.
While practicing Dentistry for nearly forty years, Shpeen was actively involved in the Jewish community.  He was a member of the Young Leadership Council, volunteered in the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey’s Men’s Cabinet and at Super Sunday.  He served on the Board of Trustees of the Federation, the Jewish Community VOICE and was the recipient of the Shelly Greenspan Young Leadership Award in 1992.  He was also a member of the Southern Dental Society, NJ and the Louis Grossman Endodontic Study Club.
An avid golfer and passionate Eagles fan, he was a former member of the Woodcrest Country Club and Linwood Country Club and particularly enjoyed many summers at their beach home in Margate, NJ.
Dr. Shpeen is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, the former Sharon Greenberg, his daughter Samantha (David) Kivowitz, of Hoboken, NJ and their son Archie; and his son, Dr. Benjamin Shpeen (girlfriend Hannah Katz) of NYC. 
In addition, he is survived by his brother, Rabbi Scott (and the late Susan) Shpeen of Albany, NY and sister Mariam (Robert) Feist of Jacksonville, FL as well as his niece Hilary (Josh) Brownstein and his three nephews, Adam Shpeen (Emily Farber), Jacob and Max Feist and his sister-in-law, Ilene (Chris) Nowak.

Funeral services will be held at Platt Memorial Chapel, 2001 Haddonfield-Berlin Road, Cherry Hill, NJ on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at 1pm followed by interment at Locustwood Cemetery in Cherry Hill.
