Alan Gebell Obituary

Alan L. Gebell, age 78, of Niskayuna, NY, passed away on February 27, 2024 at Albany Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born on October 23, 1945 in Lyons, NY.

He graduated from Lyons Central High School in 1963 and went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree from the University at Albany and a Juris Doctor from the University at Buffalo.

Throughout his career, Alan practiced law and represented various school districts across New York State. The majority of his career he served Schenectady County as Assistant District Attorney, where he was the Chief Prosecuting Trial Attorney. He was recongized as a fair, honorable and non-discriminatory prosecutor with 25 years of service. Additionally, he was a professor at the District Attorney College in South Carolina and Schenectady County Community College where he taught business law.  

Alan served in the Army Reserves from 1969 to 1975, achieving the rank of Drill Sergeant.

He was a prominent member of the Schenectady community and active volunteer in various organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club of America, tutoring kids of all ages and the Jewish War Veterans. Alan served on the board of Congregation Gates of Heaven, Schenectady County Jewish Community Center and B'nai Brith Housing, where he served two terms as President.  

Alan is survived by his wife of 53 years, Yvette Cohen Gebell, daughters Meredith Gebell and Elaine Gebell, son-in-law Philip Sparer, and grandson Max Sparer. He was preceded in death by his father Meyer Gebell, mother Mary Kurland Gebell and sister Deanne Gebell Gitner.  

A funeral service for Alan will be held at Congregation Gates of Heaven, 852 Ashmore Ave in Schenectady on Thursday February 29 at 3:00 pm. The funeral services will be livestreamed and can be viewed at Interment will follow at Congregation Gates of Heaven, Watts Street Cemetery.

Following the cemetery the family will return back to Congregation Gates of Heaven at 5:00 pm for a meal of condolence and minyan. Minyan will continue at the family home Saturday, March 2 at 7:00 pm and Sunday, March 3 at 7:00 pm.
