Alton P. Mendleson Jr. 87 of Glenmont, New York died on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. Alton was raised in Albany and attended the Albany Academy for 13 years. He was a 3 letter man, Captain of Company B and graduated cum laude in 1951. After graduating, he attended Princeton University, graduating in 1955 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Following Princeton, Alton served a year and a half in the U.S. Air Force and later went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Stanford University.
In 1959, Alton went to work for B.T. Babbitt, Inc.; a consumer goods company located in Albany and New York City. He left that job in 1967 when the company was sold and went to work for the Eden Park Nursing Home Organization where he was employed for more than 45 years, the last 40 years of which he was President. After retiring, Alton spent most of his time at his home on Van Wies Point in Glenmont and also with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Gaynelle, three children from a first marriage, Alton V. Mendleson of California, Andrew S. Mendleson and his wife Lauri of Glenmont, NY and Holly Oropallo of Delmar, NY. He is also survived by step children, Maureen Piazza of Watervliet, NY, Hugh Glennon of Maine, Jennifer Spinelli of Virginia and Anthony Spinelli of Kingston, NY. Alton is also survived by three grandchildren, Zachary and Steven Mendleson and Kayla Oropallo.
Services will be held at the Mendleson Chapel, located on the grounds of the Beth Emeth Cemetery on Turner Lane in Loudonville, NY on Friday, June 25, 2021 at 1:00 pm. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to call at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY on Thursday, June 24, 2021 form 4:00 – 7:00pm. Those wishing to remember Alton in a special way may make a memorial contribution to the Community Hospice, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.
