Arlene S. Krouner Obituary

Albany – Arlene S. Krouner, 90, passed away on Wednesday July 16, 2025. Born in Albany on September 12, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Abraham Shapiro and Anita Bernstein.

Arlene was a graduate of Albany High School Class of 1952 and would go on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree from Cornell University School of Agriculture and went on to earn a degree in nursing. While at Cornell, she was a member of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority.

Arlene met her late husband Danny in high school when Danny was a hot shot basketball player and Arlene a fiery cheerleader on the sidelines. She said, “The first time I saw him he was coming down the steps popping Good n’ Plenty’s .” The two married in 1955 and spent 67 years by each other’s side, until Danny’s passing in February 2023. Building a family and life together they were consumed by each other's love. Danny's favorite activity was making Arlene happy up until the day he died. And Arlene’s favorite was making Danny feel loved and supported each and every day, all while spending hours chatting away. Arlene spoke, Danny listened. If she wasn’t dressing them in color-coordinated outfits or keeping their social calendar busy, you could find Arlene making friends with every person she encountered in her long life. Never without a fresh brightly colored manicure, or pristine blonde hair, Arlene maintained her fabulous outlook on life until her final moments.

Arlene loved her work as a nurse and pursued her passion until the arrival of her first child. Through her whole life she maintained her role as a caregiver. In her retired years Arlene loved driving with her grandkids in her Chrysler convertible with the top down and a Gloria Estefan CD on loop. If she wasn’t attending her husband Danny’s beloved Boston Celtics games, Arlene enjoyed spending her summer days at The Saratoga Race Track or chatting with friends at the JCC pool. She especially loved her evenings at The Saratoga Performing Arts Center seeing operas, bands, and musicals.

Arlene will be remembered by her family as a loving, outgoing, strong-willed, fiery, fabulous, funny, and above all else, woman who loved her family and friends dearly.

Arlene’s son Scott Krouner, daughter Dayna Nicles and her grandchildren Samantha Nicles-Aitken and Lily Nicles, would like to extend deep gratitude to Maxine Parchment and Melania Thomas-Royal for their years of love and dedication to Arlene’s care since her diagnosis with Lewy Body Dementia.

Those wishing to remember Arlene in a special way can make memorial contributions in her name to either the Lewy Body Dementia Resource Center or The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration.

Arlene is survived by her four children, her eight cherished grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews and dear friends. In addition to her parents, Arlene was predeceased by her husband, Daniel H. Krouner.

Funeral services for Arlene will be held on Sunday July 20th at 11:00 am at Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave. Albany. Burial will follow at Temple Israel Cemetery, 1620 Western Ave in Guilderland NY. The family encourages anyone attending to wear color in lieu of all black as Arlene loved bright colors.
