Arthur Bernhardt Obituary

Loudonville - Arthur Bernhardt, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, ACBL bridge diamond life master, former Wall Street senior security analyst, gardener, world traveler, weather watcher, and enthusiastic follower of current affairs, passed away on January 25, 2025 after a brief illness. He was 90 years old.

Arthur was born in New York City on September 10, 1934, to the late Sam and Ruth Bernhardt, but spent most of his childhood in Brooklyn, where he was an avid Brooklyn Dodgers fan and eager participant in local politics, as evidenced by an appearance on the prestigious New York Times Youth Forum in 1946. Arthur later graduated with a BA in Economics from Brooklyn College, and following his education, served in the US Navy from 1955-1957. His life changed forever in November 1955 when he went on a blind date with a friend of a friend, and by the next morning, Arthur said with absolute certainty that he had met the girl he was going to marry. That prediction came to pass less than one year later on October 7, 1956, when he married the former Margot Klein, beginning a partnership that lasted over 68 years. They brought two children into the world, Richard and Jana, and in 1975, the family moved to the Albany area for Arthur to pursue an opportunity with the New York State Department of Health. Both Arthur and Margot retired in 1998, and spent the next two decades travelling the world, visiting dozens of countries on six continents. Arthur also routinely played bridge multiple days a week, participating in countless local and regional tournaments. Further, he maintained his lifelong interest in basketball by participating in pickup games through age 80.

Arthur was predeceased by his parents and brothers Bobby, Barry, and David, and is survived by his beloved wife Margot, children Richard (Becky) and Jana (Patrick), brother Jerry (Irene), sister-in-law Madi (Paul), grandchildren Jase (Beth) and Ryah, and great-grandson Ronen. A graveside service will be held at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, New York.
