Avrum Tabachneck, 77, of Mechanicville, NY, passed unexpectedly on September 25, 2021.

Avrum was born in Albany, NY to Ethel and Samuel Tabachneck on July 10, 1944, where he lived most of his life. He married his high school sweetheart Rosemary Pollack on August 7, 1966.

After graduating from Albany High School in 1962, he earned a B.S. in Physical Education from Ithaca College in 1966 and an M.S. in Heath Education from SUNY Cortland in 1967. Avrum worked as a Health Education Teacher at Mt. Pleasant High School and coached wrestling at Draper High School in Schenectady, NY. He left teaching to join the family grocery business, Trading Port/Bi-Lo Corporation, where he served as President. He was a well-respected business professional focused on serving the independent, family-owned and operated supermarkets in the Capital Region. He was the recipient of many awards from the Grocery Manufacturer’s Representative Association.

Avrum was actively involved in Congregation Ohav Shalom where he served as Education Vice President and President of the synagogue. He was instrumental in the building of the new education wing.

He was a life member of SPAC and supported many other capital-area performing arts groups such as Proctor’s Theater, MacHaydn Theater, and the Theater Barn. He was a season-ticket holder of Siena Basketball and a member of the Siena Basketball Coaches Club for approximately 50 years.

Avrum is preceded in death by his parents Ethel and Samuel Tabachneck.

Avrum is survived by his beloved wife Rosemary, his son Scott Tabachneck and daughter Shayna Watkins, his sisters Andrea (Jerome) Morenoff, Suzanne (Elli) Benno, and Syma (Keith Cramer) Tabachneck and his four grandsons, Noah, Sam, Ethan, and Joshua Tabachneck. He will be lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Avrum lived his life with a deep conviction to bring joy to others. He was generous to a fault. More than anything else, his love of family and friends guided his life.
