Bernard Edward Butler
Bernie, almost 93, died peacefully on January 17, 2023 in Peabody Massachusetts. Born on January 28th, 1930 in Troy, New York, a first generation American. The youngest son of Ida and Hyman Butler, he had a brother Sydney who predeceased him in 1980. Bernie graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering.
Bernie was a civil engineer with the State of New York and worked in the private sector for a time in New York City. He served on many national committees while working for the state of New York. Active in community affairs, he was very involved with Congregation Ohav Sholom in Albany serving in leadership. He aided in the development of the current temple building and of the senior citizens housing project.
He is survived by the love of his life Eleanore (Ellie) Butler (née Teitelbaum) whom he married in 1953 in Albany, New York. He is also survived by his daughter Sandra Sparr (Gary) and his son Martin Butler (Jill), his 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He also is survived by his nephew David Butler and his niece Barbara Dombrowski. Bernie enjoyed painting, tennis, classical music, traveling, and spending time with his family.
Graveside services will be held at the Ohav Shalom Cemetery, 1620 Western Avenue Albany, NY 12203 on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 12 noon.
