Betty Shapiro Obituary

Albany - Betty R. Shapiro, 92 a resident of Albany, NY passed away peacefully at Albany Medical Center on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Louis and Francis Rose. 

Born in Yonkers, NY on November 13, 1932, Betty attended SUNY Albany where she studied for her teaching degree, later meeting and marrying her husband Norm Shapiro on June 15, 1953.

Betty worked with her husband for many years after he opened “Norm’s Delicatessen and Sandwich Shop” on New Scotland Avenue. A number of years later, Betty was employed by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for over 20 years before retiring at the age of 70.

Betty hobbies included many craft projects from knitting sweaters and mittens, embroidering shirts and sweatshirts for her family to making quilts, afghans, tissue box covers and eyeglass cases as gifts. During the COVID epidemic, she made face masks for her family. 

Betty was an avid bingo player where she played every week with her daughter Robin for many years. She was the chairperson of the bell jar committee for a number of years at Temple Beth Abraham Jacob.

Betty is predeceased by her husband of 67 years Norman “Norm” Shapiro, daughter Robin Shapiro, son David Shapiro and grandson Ryan Shapiro. Betty is survived by her son Michael, daughter-in-law Sharon, grandson Timothy (Jennifer) and great grandson Alex. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in memory of Betty Shapiro to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, NY 12204 and Congregation Beth Emeth, 100 Academy Rd. Albany, NY 12208.

Funeral services for Betty will be held on Friday May, 23rd at 10:00 am at The Independent Benevolent Cemetery, 260 Fuller Rd. in Albany. The funeral will be livestreamed on the Levine Memorial Chapel Facebook page at 10:00 am.
