Caryl M. Newhof Obituary

Caryl Miriam Newhof, having lived an extraordinary life, died on November 27, 2025. Born in Albany, NY on May 22, 1926 to the late Jennette and Aaron Newhof, Caryl attended Albany Academy for Girls where she graduated Cum Laude. Caryl was an accomplished equestrian and excelled in every sport she tried. She received her B.S. in Physical Education as Class Valedictorian from Boston University, Sargent College. Caryl went on to achieve her M.S. in Physical Education from Smith College where she was hired while getting her M.S. and proceeded to build an illustrious career at Smith as a Professor of Exercise and Sports Studies for 43 years retiring as Professor Emerita. Caryl taught a wide range of sports including Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Squash, Tennis, Horseback Riding and Basketball and coached both Field Hockey and Squash. She toured Europe and South Africa in the 1950s with the United States Field Hockey Team and her renowned career garnered her induction in 3 Sports Halls of Fame: Albany Academy for Girls, Boston University and Smith College, where there is a Field Hockey Tournament named in her honor. Caryl was a National Field Hockey Official umpiring international games in the USA and Europe as well as a National Basketball Official.


Caryl was a vocal champion of women’s sports and made huge strides for women nationally. She mentored many women and left an indelible mark on women’s sports at Smith College.


Another passion was Caryl’s love of golf which she played well into her 80s as a lifelong member of Colonie Country Club winning the Club Championship. Along with winters on Marco Island and Longboat Key, she loved a great meal, great friends and great ice cream.


Caryl was predeceased by her sister, Hildreth Newhof Reiss and is survived by her beloved niece, Jan Reiss-Weitzman (Richard Bass). She leaves behind many cousins.


Caryl was most fortunate to have wonderful caregivers both at home and at Daughters of Sarah. Each of you angels know who you are and your compassion will be remembered always. A heartfelt thank you to Gary Weitzman for all you unconditionally did for Caryl over the years.


As the oldest lifelong member of Congregation Beth Emeth, Caryl’s funeral will take place there on December 1, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. 100 Academy Road Albany, NY. For those unable to attend, the service will be livestreamed via Congregation Beth Emeth’s website www.cbealbany.org. The period of mourning will be held December 1, 2025 from 6-8 p.m. with a minyan service at 7 p.m. at The Hamlet Community Room 5000 Dunhill Court Slingerlands, NY.
