Cathee Weiss Obituary

With the heartbreaking loss of esteemed colleague and friend Cathee Weiss, Senior Director of Development of the Western Region, members of the HUC-JIR community have established an endowed scholarship in her honor.

Today we invite you to join them by supporting this loving tribute to her life.

Born in 1954 in Albany, NY, Cathee attended Sarah Lawrence College and began her career producing TV commercials in New York City before moving to Los Angeles in 1992.

After years making documentary films in LA, Cathee brought her storytelling sensibility and filmmaking expertise to the fundraising team on HUC-JIR’s Skirball Campus in 2011. There, in addition to fundraising and staging events, she created highly produced, topical videos that launched the College-Institute into the world of online learning.

Cathee’s interests spanned religion, politics, special-needs advocacy, art, and literature; as such, her work at HUC suited her perfectly. She told HUC’s story so compellingly, because she told it as her own, as indeed it largely was.

Cathee has left an indelible mark on HUC-JIR and all those who knew her. She is survived by her husband, Ivan; children, Red and Daniel; brother, Jeffrey; sister-in-law, Chris; “adopted sister,” Dora; niece and nephew, Jonnie and Ivory; and her doting father, Leonard, all of whom inhabited her stories and drove her awe-inspiring, tireless sense of purpose.

The Cathee Weiss Memorial Scholarship at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion celebrates her life and her commitment to friends, family, and the students of her beloved HUC-JIR.
