Charles Steinberg Obituary

We announce with sadness the passing of Charles Ira (Charlie) Steinberg, age 79, on June 29, 2022, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, NY following a brief illness and years of medical challenges. Charlie and his beloved wife Naomi most recently resided in Albany, NY a move to bring them closer to their daughters and their families.

Charlie was born in NYC on January 3, 1943, to Yale David and Ruth (nee Goldberg) Steinberg who predeceased him. He was the older brother of Lester and Rosie. His childhood years were fondly spent growing up in the Bronx surrounded by an extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. He also had many close lifelong friends who were more like family, including Glenn Josphe, Abe Kirshman, and Butch Murphy.

Charlie earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting with a minor in Philosophy from Fordham University in the Bronx. He then earned his MBA from Bernard M. Baruch/City University of NY and sat for his CPA in both New York State and Vermont.

In fact, while taking his CPA exam in Burlington, VT he decided to visit his Aunt Anne in nearby Montreal, QU. Anne introduced him that weekend to his future bride, Naomi Berlin, to whom he was married in Montreal on January 8, 1966. They celebrated their 56th anniversary in January.

Charlie worked for several Manhattan firms including Litton Industries, American Express, and Paramount Productions. He loved his time at Paramount where he worked on the financing of many films and was able to travel around the world. He especially enjoyed taking his son Steven to see Roy Scheider in the filming of the movie, Sorcerer.

Charlie accepted a position as CFO for a small Long Island family-owned company called Global Office Supply, and later helped take them public, a fact of which he was very proud.

Among his passions was his love for Judaism. Charlie, who took his daughter Marcy to Shabbat services at Congregation Beth-El in Massapequa every weekend. Later, with his good friend Irwin Bressler, they founded the Young Israel of Massapequa, providing an Orthodox shul to the community for more than 12 years. He found his most comfortable home in his Yeshiva Sh’or Yoshuv, Far Rockaway, NY where he studied twice a week under Rabbi Kurland for more than 30 years – even via Zoom from Swan Lake and Albany.

Charlie and Naomi followed their son and younger daughter to live in Long Beach, NY in 1998 before retiring to Swan Lake, NY in 2016, the site of many of Charlie’s fondest memories. He delighted in taking his children and grandchildren and all visitors on a tour of important locations such as the place where he caught a 4–10-pound fish (it grew as the years went by) which he shared with the chef at one of the big hotels. The chef was delighted and prepared kosher steak for him several times that summer. And his love for fishing was shared with his children and grandchildren.

He had a passion for Harness Racing making frequent visits to Yonkers and Monticello racetracks to see his horses’ race. An amateur harness horse breeder and racer, Charlie won the first Billings Class Race at the then new Tioga Downs.

While living at the Massry, Charlie loved to sing aloud with all the performers and shared his jokes and puns with his friends.

Charlie is survived by his wife Naomi (nee Berlin) Steinberg, daughter Marcy and son-in-law Troy Stryker and their children Zachary and Jacob, his granddaughter Emily (Steven) Steinberg, and his daughter Daniella Lans and her daughter Faige. He is also survived by his brother Lester (Ronnie) Steinberg of Massapequa, NY and many beloved family members.

Charlie is predeceased by his parents Yale and Ruth Steinberg, his in-laws, Irving and Rose Berlin, and his sister Rose Jo Steinberg. He is also predeceased by his beloved son Steven, with whom he shared a very special bond.

The funeral is scheduled for Friday, July 1, 2022, at the Independent Benevolent (Jewish) Cemetery at 1:30pm. The cemetery is located near 260 Fuller Road, Albany, NY. Funeral services will also be broadcast on YouTube live. Please use this link: https://youtu.be/qSsEo5ndcQ4
