Cynthia S. Tepper Obituary

Cynthia S. Tepper, a long-time resident of Schenectady and Niskayuna, died on Monday, January 19 in Chevy Chase, Maryland. She was 95 years-old.


Mrs. Tepper was born in Queens, New York on February 8, 1930. She was the daughter of Harry and Frances Silver (Ellmann), and had a sister, Evelyn S. Zuckerman, who predeceased her.


Mrs. Tepper moved to Schenectady after her marriage to Dr. Clifford Tepper, MD in1951. Dr. Tepper, who was a practicing pediatrician, allergist and immunologist in the community for forty years, predeceased Mrs. Tepper, passing away at the age of 100 in 2023.


During the early 1950s, Mrs. Tepper assisted her husband as he and his brother, Jason Tepper, MD, and James Kennedy, MD, built their pediatrics and pediatric allergy medical practice. She also raised four children and became active as a volunteer in a wide range of community organizations and programs.


Mrs. Tepper received her Bachelor's Degree from Russell Sage College in the early 1950s. In the 1970s Mrs. Tepper received her Masters Degree in Education at SUNY Albany, and worked as a substitute teacher at Martin Luther King Elementary School in Schenectady. In the 1980s and 1990s, Mrs. Tepper established and then served as the manager of the museum store at the Schenectady Museum.


Mrs. Tepper was particularly active at her synagogue, Congregation Agudat Achim, serving on the Board of Directors and on several committees. She was also active in Democratic politics in the Capital District.


Mrs. Tepper is survived by her children, Stewart (Deborah Tepper), of Pound Ridge, NY, Nancy, of New York, NY, Henry (Jane Henoch), of Lincoln, MA, and Audrey, of Bethesda, MD, by six grandchildren, Clinton (Katharine Farley Tepper), Sam, Annie, Jonathan, Kate and Miles, by and two great-grandchildren, Boone and Faris.


Services will be held at Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Union Street, Schenectady, NY, on Friday, January 23 at 12 PM. A Minyan will be held at the home of Susan Tepper LeClair, at 1787 Central Parkway in Schenectady, after the service and burial.


Memorial Contributions in Cynthia Tepper’s name may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Union College or the Mohawk-Hudson Land Conservancy.
