David Herbach Obituary

Delmar -  David J. Herbach passed away November 2, 2022 at home just as he wished. Dave was born in Brooklyn New York in 1924. He attended Boys High where he lettered in cross country. He enrolled in Brooklyn College, but when he turned 18 in 1942, he enlisted in the Army.

Dave was most proud of his military service, serving during WWII at posts in the United States, Europe and the Philippines. Returning to Brooklyn, Dave graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in economics and then moved to Albany in 1949. In Albany, he began his 37½ year career with the State of New York, including working for three decades as a budget analyst at the Division of the Budget. Shortly after his move to Albany, he enlisted in the National Guard. He continued to serve his country until he reached mandatory retirement age, retiring at the rank of Command Sergeant Major in the Army Reserve. Dave was one of the first Jewish residents of Delmar, moving there in 1951 where he resided for the remainder of his life. Dave served for many years as secretary to the Albany County Pistol Club and as a gun safety instructor. He also enjoyed operating D J Herbach Sporting Goods.

Dave was predeceased by his parents Louis and Clara, his brother Bummy, his first wife Sonya “Sunny”, his wife of over 50 years Sue, and his grandson Alix.

Dave is survived by his four children Bruce (Cynthia), Deborah (Bennett), Nancy, and Richard, and grandchildren Samantha, Joy, Emma, Sonya, Nicholas, Aubrey, and Devon. The family is grateful to Dru Mercer for her care and dedication to Dave.
