Doris Freedman Pock Obituary

Albany – Doris Freedman Pock, 93, passed away peacefully at home on Monday October 3, 2022 after a short illness. Doris was an inspiration to all who knew her. Born on April 30, 1929 and was the daughter of the late Herman and Sophia Freedman.

She was very proud to be from the South End of Albany and a proud graduate of the former Schuyler High School in Albany. Doris received her bachelor’s and master’s Degrees in English and was a member of the first graduating class from SUNY Albany formerly New York State College for Teachers. Doris taught English first as a student teacher at the former Milne School in Albany and then was employed as a teacher in The Bethlehem Central Middle School teaching 7th and 9th grade. She taught there for a period of 20 years.

In addition to teaching, Doris also helped her husband Abram with running their business, the longtime Blue Note Record Store in Albany. Doris never stopped teaching and continued to inspire everyone she met, young and old alike and passed on her love for learning as well as her love for volunteering and giving back to her community. She was an every election voter, whether it was the School Board or Presidential Election and she instilled that value in her family as well as all of her students. Family and civic engagement were very important to her. Doris always saw the best in everyone that she met.

Doris was an avid reader and excellent writer, gardener and loved discussing everything from current events to literature. She also had a passion for the Yiddish Language as well as cooking and baking. She had such a zest for learning that she even took Yiddish language classes at the Albany Jewish Community Center. She also loved all animals, especially cats. Doris will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She was predeceased by her parents Sophia and Herman Freedman and her beloved sister, Roberta Freedman. She was also predeceased by her niece, Beth Jennifer Jaffe Richards, her sisters-in-law, Henrietta Pock Schaffer, Bertha Pock Tafler and Miriam Pock Jaffe and the love of her life, her husband of almost 60 years, “the boy next door”, Abram Pock. Doris grew up residing at 22 Catherine Street and Abram lived at 24 Catherine Street in Albany’s South End. Doris and Abram had the kind of marriage where they would try to outdo each other on who could make each other laugh the hardest.

Doris leaves behind her beloved numerous nieces and nephews, Bram Freedman, Jocelyn Freedman (her fiancé Lawrence Gold) Leah Jaffe Caplan, (Sanford) their children Seth and Evan Caplan, Susan Tafler (Charles) Koplick; their daughter, Sarah Koplick, Yukich (Rudy) and their children, Nina, Jane and Bayla Mae, Jay and Evelyn Schaffer, her cousin Leah Schenkel as well as her dear friend and colleague, Richard Feldman; and her many friends and forever students.
