Albany – Doris Schlamowitz, 95, passed away peacefully at the Massry Residence, in Albany, on Thursday January 30, 2025. Born in Brooklyn, she is the daughter of the late Abraham and Rose Friedman.
Doris was married to Gilbert Schlamowitz for more than 65 years until his passing in 2014. She raised her family and then returned to her career working as a court reporter in Albany to be able to send Eric and Heidi to college, which was something she was very proud of. Doris worked as a stenographer for the City of Albany courts. One of Doris' proud accomplishments was passing the New York State Supreme Court Reporters exam where she was offered a position. Her most memorable experience was when she worked as a freelance stenographer and had the opportunity to record The New York State Republican Convention when Nelson Rockefeller was the governor. After his address to the convention, Doris received a personal thank you and signed note from Governor Rockefeller that she cherished and always carried in her pocketbook.
Later in life Doris developed a passion for running. She set the record for the 75 and over division at The Stockade-a-thon 15k race. Doris finished The Freihofer’s Run for Women three months after aortic valve replacement at the age of 85, and was presented a dozen roses by her cardiologist, Dr. Eric Roccario at the finish line. On Wednesday June 3, 2015 the Mayor of Albany, Kathy Sheehan, proclaimed that day as Doris Schlamowitz Day in honor of her completion of the Freihofer's Run For Women three days earlier and her service to the City of Albany.
Doris and Gilbert were lifelong members of Temple Israel in Albany. Often she would accompany Gilbert, the Gabbai at Temple Israel for 29 years, attending daily services. Doris will always be remembered by her family as a hardworking and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was well respected by her peers in the court system.
Doris is survived by her children, Eric (Karen Kaufman) Schlamowitz and Heidi Schlamowitz; her granddaughters, Abby (Jarrod) Feintouch and Carly (Michael) Kelly; her great-grandchildren; Josie, Laney, Eli, Amelia and Maren; and her sister, Gloria Horn.
Doris was predeceased by her husband Gilbert Schlamowitz; and her brothers, Seymour (Sylvia) Friedman and Milton (Eppie) Friedman.
