Saratoga Springs - Dr. Gerald Benjamin, DDS, Extraordinaire, died in Saturday, January 6,2024, at the Saratoga Hospital. Gerald was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 4, 1948, the son of Lawrence H. Benjamin and Mildred (Tannenbaum) Benjamin. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Joyce, his mother and father-in-law, Stella Religa Pietrzyk and Mathew V. Pietrzyk, and his brother-in-law Matthew J. Pietrzyk.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 52 years, Susan, his dear friend from childhood, Michael Nussbaum (Suzanne), his dear friends from the first day of dental school Daniel and Judith Leff, his brother and sister-in-law Gary and Debra Pietrzyk, nieces Allison Dankner and Emily Pietrzyk, and nephews Joshua and Mathew Pietrzyk. They will mourn and miss him along with a host of other dear friends.
Dr. Benjamin grew up in Laurelton, NY and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1966. He graduated from SUNY Buffalo with a bachelors in History in 1970 and completed his education by obtaining his DDS degree from SUNY Buffalo in 1977. He subsequently completed a Certificate of Proficiency in Esthetic Dentistry from SUNY Buffalo in 2001. Gerald was one of the few fortunate people who truly loved what he did. He woke up each day enthusiastic about the day to come.
The motto in his dental office and life was “DO THE RIGHT THING!” He lived by this motto and often bemoaned the fact not enough other people believed in it. He was always available to his patients and friends to discuss dental and medical issues. He also loved a good political discussion, a good glass of red wine with friends, and a great charcuterie board at a nice restaurant. Anyone fortunate enough to be invited to any of his parties was welcomed with his genuine smile and warmth and acceptance for all.
Gerald was proud of his contribution as the co-founder of the world’s first Esthetic Center within a dental school at SUNY Buffalo in 1995. He was the first-place winner of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Smile Contest in San Antonio in 1999. He enjoyed mentoring younger dentists and was always willing to discuss techniques and offer assistance with difficult cases.
We want to thank the doctors and staff in the Emergency Room, ICU and the surgical center at Saratoga Hospital. They went above and beyond the norm in their dedication to caring for Dr. Benjamin in this emergency situation.
Contributions to a charity of one’s choice or The Smile Train at PO Box 96246, Washington, DC 20090 in memory of Dr. Gerald Benjamin would be appreciated.
A memorial service for Gerald will be held on Thursday January 11th at 11:00 am at The Adelphi Hotel, 365 Broadway Saratoga Springs.
