Edward Alterman, 93, passed away peacefully in Albany, New York, on March 5. Born in Brooklyn to Saul Alterman and Fay (Goldstein) Alterman, Edward leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service. A longtime resident of Maplewood, New Jersey, he volunteered in the community as treasurer of the Clinton Elementary School PTA, Congregation Oheb Shalom in South Orange, and the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Essex County.
Professionally, he was a certified public accountant and professor at New York City Technical College in Brooklyn. Over a 40-year career, he held several leadership positions at both the school and Professional Staff Congress/PSC CUNY, a union that represents faculty and professional staff of the City University of New York campuses. He was particularly fond of his roles as treasurer of the PSC CUNY Welfare Fund and president of the PSC-CUNY Credit Union.
A graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, Edward also earned degrees from Brooklyn College, New York University Stern School of Business, and Yeshiva University.
Edward is survived by his wife of 33 years, Shayna; He is preceded in death by his second wife, Tobe (d. 1988) and first wife, Arlene (d. 1977). In addition to the children he shared with Arlene (Laura Calhoun, Suzanne Alterman, and Richard Alterman), mourners include his sister, Ruth Brod; Tobe’s children Jonathan Menkis and Sarah Macaluso whom Edward first met in the early 1980s and grew to love as his own; and Shayna’s children Robin Panzer and Charles Panzer, whom Edward met about 10 years later and welcomed with love into his large, blended family. Together with Shayna, Edward enjoyed dinner and a show, retirement in Boca Raton, Florida, and being the grandfather to 13 He donated to various causes, big and small. Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue in Albany on Sunday, March 9, 2025 at 2:00pm . Interment will be held on Monday , March 10th,12 noon at the Oheb Shalom Cemetery in Hillside, New Jersey
