Eleanor Grant Obituary

Albany - Eleanor Grant, 98, of Albany, NY, died on Friday, August 31, at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home. Eleanor was born on September 20, 1925, in Albany, NY.

A lifelong resident of Albany, she was a 1945 graduate from Albany High School and continued on to  Mildred Elley, a secretarial school in Albany, where she completed her Secretarial, Partnership Accounting course in June 1946.

At the Office of the State Comptroller Annual Service Award luncheon in 1991, Eleanor received a 40-year service award. She retired after a career working for the State of NY.

Eleanor was pre-deceased by her mother, Lillian Grode Grant, father Julius Grant, brother Lawrence Grant (Ethlyn Goodman Grant) of Albany, NY, sister Harriet Grant Weisbrod (Marvin) of Van Nuys, CA, and sister-in-law Marsha Kantrowitz Grant of Fair Lawn, NJ.

She is survived by her brother Harold Grant of Fair Lawn, NJ. Nieces and nephews:  Alexandra (Ed) Weisbrod McWilliams of San Diego, CA, Richard (Claire Collopy) of Oakland, CA, Paula Grant (Tom Keane) of Lansing, NY, Gregg Grant (Lynda Shane Blasko) of Atlanta, GA, and Jami Grant of Caldwell NJ, as well as grand-nephew and nieces: Devin (Danielle) Grant-Keane, Ellyn Grant-Keane, Julia Weisbrod, and great-grand nephews: Cairo and Zion Grant-Keane.

In her last few years, she shared fond memories of trips to California to see and stay with family, day trips to NYC, and vacations in Florida. She enjoyed going to local lakes, including Lake George, for swimming and having good times on motorboat outings for the “Cousin’s Club” picnic reunions. She fondly remembered her High School years with football games and marching bands, and many years of playing tennis, swimming, and ice skating in downtown Albany parks with her friends.

She lived a simple lifestyle.  She was talented in drawing and painting, but her real passion was sewing, embroidery, crocheting, and knitting. She made everyday items from skirts and pants to intricate sweaters. Not to mention the plethora of the children’s items: knitted and fabric stuffed dolls, doll clothing including Barbie doll clothes, barnyards of animals, and classrooms of dolls of all sizes were gifts for her friends and family. She enjoyed going out with friends or family to lunch and some shopping, topped off with a treat. Her generosity was shown in the time and love she put into her gifts and her experiences. Prior to moving to Daughters of Sarah, she lived at the Massry on the same campus, and in a friendly and quiet way, she participated and enjoyed the activities provided there.

Those wishing to remember Eleanor may make a memorial contribution to the Daughters of Sarah Community for Seniors and The Massry at 180 Washington Ave Extension, Albany, NY 12203, or to the Alzheimer’s  Disease Association, Northeastern New York Chapter, 103 Loudon Rd, Cohoes, NY 12047 .
