Glenmont - Elyse Helene (Faber) Fogelman, 73, of Glenmont passed away on February 5, 2024 following a long illness. She will be deeply missed by her loved ones, her circle of friends, and the many students and colleagues who knew her professionally. Elyse is the daughter of George and Esther Faber and was born in Brooklyn, NY, on February 27, 1950, and raised mostly in Syosset, Long Island, the 1968 graduate went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary and Special Education from Buffalo State College. She moved on from there to the University of Connecticut, completing a Master’s Degree in Special Education in 1973. After three years teaching in Tolland, CT, she married the love of her life, Marty, in 1976.
The newlyweds, who first met as undergraduates in Buffalo, moved together to the Capital District, where they have resided ever since. After two years as a Special Ed resource room teacher in North Colonie, Elyse took several years off from teaching to be with their two children, Sarah and David. She then took on a similar role in the South Colonie school system. A few years later she moved to a first grade classroom followed by a kindergarten job, in which she remained, enthusiastically, until her 2012 retirement. Elyse had many interests. An avid reader, she was long recognized as a master baker and knitter, pastimes in which she also proved to be an inspiring and patient teacher and mentor. As an active member of Congregation Ohav Shalom, she served on a number of its committees, some for many years. She enjoyed playing word and card games, which also strengthened the many warm friendships she made in childhood through retirement.
Elyse was devoted to her family. Along with Marty, she leaves behind Sarah Fogelman (David L. Sachs) and David (Jaclyn) Fogelman, all of whom she adored. Never out of her thoughts were the couple’s four adored grandchildren: Charlotte, Benjamin, Ruby, and Lincoln. Her love and support for them was infinite, as she became their most passionate fan, teacher, and role model. She is also survived by her brother, Robert (Karen) Faber; and her brother-in-law, Arthur (Steve Rankin) Fogelman.
Funeral services for Elyse will be held on Thursday February 8th at 11:00 am at Congregation Ohav Shalom, 113 Krumkill Rd. Albany, NY. The services will be livestreamed and can be viewed by visiting https://www.ohavshalom.org/livestream/ Burial will follow at The Ohav Shalom Cemetery on Church Rd. in Guilderland.
Shiva will be held at the Fogelman residence in Glenmont after the funeral on Thursday and on Friday from 10 am – 4 pm. Shiva will resume in Newton, MA at the Fogelman-Sachs residence on Sunday and Monday at 10 am.
