Erna (Kallmann) Frank
June 3, 1921 ~ December 28, 2023 (age 102) 102 Years Old
Laguna Woods, CA - Erna C. Frank died on Thursday, December 28 at the age of 102. Erna was a remarkable woman, always optimistic and a great source of practical wisdom and support for our whole family. She was the matriarch of our family and supported all of us emotionally, intellectually, and financially. She was raised in a wealthy home in Berlin during the rise of Hitler, but then denied the ability to attend school at 15. When she denied the ability to work at 17, she realized she had no future in Germany and fled to the US to meet her father who had already moved his beer importing business to the US when Prohibition ended.
Her boyfriend from Berlin, Rudy welcomed her with roses and an English dictionary. Despite the crushing disapproval of her family, she gave up her life of wealth for a wonderful love story that lasted until Rudy died in 1985. During that time they had moved back to Germany for 21 years living in Munich, preferring the European life, and traveling the world. In 1986, As a widow Erna decided she wanted to become a California girl and live with the sun and palm trees, even though she knew no one and was already 65. She ignored pleas to move closer to family and waived as she flew over us on the East Coast. We all visited her often, until she passed exactly as she wanted in her own apartment peacefully in her sleep under the California sun. She accomplished it all.
Erna was the daughter of Arthur Kallmann born near the Polish border and his family moved to Berlin, because of antisemitism in 1900. Her mother Sedonia nee Stein was born in Berlin and died in New York devastated by the death of her mother Rosalia Stein in Theresienstadt. Erna’s brother Herbert Kallmann came to the US after Kristallnacht, when he was 11, and died in Aspen at 89.
Erna Frank was like Queen Elizabeth - never loud, never brash. Kind, considerate, proper, and ladylike with a lovely sense of humor.
Erna is survived by two daughters Barbara and Carol Frank, Three grandchildren, David Molnia, Meredith Frank-Molnia, Tamara Larsen and ten great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held this coming Thursday, January 4 at 2:30 PM at Albany Rural Cemetery. Please meet at the Southgate Cottage at the cemetery entrance between 2 and 2:15 PM. (Corner of Menands Road and Van Rensselaer Boulevard. Menands Road is Route 378. VR Boulevard is Route 379.)
