Erna Horowits, age 98 of Albany, NY died on Tuesday afternoon March 3, 2026 at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home in Albany. Mrs. Horowits was born in Csökmő, Hungary and moved with her family to Budapest at a young age. She resided in Albany for the past 70 years and was predeceased by George Horowits, her husband of 61 years, in 2010. During WWII she escaped internment in a labor camp and was hidden by a sympathetic farmer’s family. Postwar she married and worked as a seamstress in Budapest before escaping to the United States in 1956 during the Hungarian revolution along with her husband George and daughter Judy, as well as her sister’s family. Mrs. Horowits was a skilled seamstress employed for many years at workrooms in Albany making custom draperies for residences and businesses.
She is survived by her son, Robert Horowits (Diane Borst) of Rockville, MD and her daughter, Judith Fox (Alan) of Poughkeepsie, NY; Grandson Daniel Fox (Elizabeth Russo) of Boston, MA; and Grandson Jeffrey Fox (Jessica) of Salem, MA; and great grandchildren Paige and Lucas Fox (Salem, MA) and Georgia and Abraham Russo-Fox (Boston, MA).
Services at the Temple Israel Cemetery on Western Avenue in Guilderland, NY on Friday, March 6, 2026 at 12:00 PM.
