Ethel Kagan passed away on Friday night, April 23, 2021 peacefully at home with her daughters at her side.  She was the loving wife of her childhood sweetheart Mayer Kagan who was predeceased in 2005 after 61 years of marriage, and also pre-deceased by her daughter, Faye Hanfling (David) of Edison, NJ.  She is survived by Barbara Ciment (Melvyn) of Silver Spring, MD, Todd Kagan of Albany, NY, and Risa Kagan (Richard Stern) of Berkeley, CA. grandmother of 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson, numerous nieces and nephews, and a vast number of friends.  She was also pre-deceased by 4 brothers (Jules and Abraham Kaplan, Dave and Harry Larner), and a sister (Clara Handler).

Ethel and Myer operated B. Kagan & Sons, the longest running family owned kosher meat market in the Albany area.  Ethel was born and lived her life of 95 years in Albany and known to many as the matriarch of the Jewish Community.  She was a long-term member of Congregation Beth Abraham Jacob.  She ran an unofficial caring service, each day contacting a list of people who “needed calling” because of personal challenges.  She was alert and engaged with her loved ones until the very end.

There was a graveside family funeral live-streamed and viewed by over 700 people. The stream is viewable on YouTube: (link obtainable through Levine Memorial Chapel, Ethel Kagan obituary).  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in her memory to Congregation Beth Abraham Jacob, a charity of your choice, or plant a tree in Israel.
