Albany – Gary Okrent, 74, passed away at his residence on October 17, 2023.Born in Queens, he is the son of the late Jack and Belle (Agatstein) Okrent.
Gary was a graduate of Martin Van Buren High School and Suny New Paltz College. Gary for most of his life worked as district window salesman. One of his favorite things to do was take his family along with him on his business trips. Gary loved to travel and continued to do so well after his stroke in 2005. He was a die-hard Mets and Jets fan and could always be seen wearing a cap with either team depending upon the season.
Although Gary’s stroke might have limited his capabilities, it never limited his resolve. After losing half the motion in his body, he kept working to improve himself. He continued to volunteer with different groups across the capital region, as well as making weekly deliveries to the food pantry on behalf of the building he lived in.
Gary is survived by his son, Daniel Okrent; Daughter in-law Melanie Okrent; his sisters, Adrienne Helfand and Roberta Okrent Murphy; and his grandchildren, Alexis and Dylan Okrent. He leaves behind three beautiful nieces, as well as countless loving cousins in Seattle.
Gary lived for his grandchildren, and was extremely grateful for all the joy they brought him. He will always be remembered by those closest to him as the ultimate dad joke specialist, and will surely be missed.
Garys’ family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Gary’s dear friend Larry Marowitz for always being there for Gary. Gary enjoyed going to the movies, and routinely going out to lunch with his close circle of friends.
Funeral services for Gary will be held on Sunday October 22nd at 11:00 am at The Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave. in Albany. Burial will be on Monday at The New Montefiore Cemetery on Long Island. To leave a message of condolence for the family online please visit LevineMemorialChapel.com
