Genevieve Russo Obituary

Genevieve Elizabeth Reiss Russo, loving and beloved mother, wife, sister, grandmother, friend, adventurer, raconteur, and confidante passed away on January 27, 2024, nearly two weeks after her 80th birthday party, which was attended by many friends and family.

Born in Albany, NY on January 15, 1944, to parents Murray Reiss and Bessie Dinkin, Genevieve, along with her older brother Jacob, attended Albany High School where she was captain of the cheerleadimg team. She later graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1965 with a nursing degree and a masters degree in school psychology from St. Lawrence University in 1967. In her youth, the family spent the summers camping on the islands of Lake George, NY, a pastime and passion she carried on for the rest of her life. It was at Lake George that she met her future husband, Nicholas Russo, a medical student classmate and roommate of her brother, Jacob, who had joined the family for a weekend retreat to the lake. Several years after marrying in a small ceremony in Florence, Italy, “Nick and Gen” lived in Naples, Italy for three years where Nick was stationed during his military service with the US Naval Hospital. The couple traveled extensively throughout Europe and spoke fluent Italian. Upon returning to the US, they lived first in Shrewsbury, MA before settling in Geneva, NY, and then finally in Rochester, NY, where she worked part-time as a psychotherapist for women.

Genevieve had a powerful lust for life apparent to all who knew her. Friends and strangers alike confided in her with ease. Her world travels continued right up until the very week she first showed symptoms requiring hospitalization for what ultimately resulted in a diagnosis of treatment-resistant primary CNS lymphoma. She remained as much an example of how to live at the end of her life as at any time prior, showing grace, good humor, and resilience throughout.

Genevieve was predeceased by her husband after 49 years of marriage and is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth and Rebecca, son Julian, brother Jacob, sister-in-law Betty, sons-in-law Dan and Michael, daughter-in-law Evelina, and grandchildren Georgia, Tova, Abraham, Nomi, and Nicola. She is also survived by her treasured nieces and cousins.

Genevieve was buried alongside her parents at the Congregation Beth Emeth cemetery in Albany, NY on January 29, 2024. The family is hosting a memorial remotely via teleconference on April 7, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Please reach out to Julian Russo for details at (607) 342-3106 or by email at
