Howard Eglowstein, 65, of Nashua, NH passed suddenly on March 14, 2026. He was born in Newark, NJ on May 14, 1960 to Amy and Ira Eglowstein. After the family moved to Buffalo, were Howard graduated from Williamsville East High School where he served as photography editor of the yearbook. He graduated from MIT in 1982, and worked in the renowned media lab, an interdisciplinary research lab that encourages the unconventional mixing and matching of seemingly disparate research areas.

Early in his career, after turning down a position with Bill Gates early in the Microsoft evolution, he took a position with Coleco where he was instrumental in the development of Adam, perhaps his proudest career accomplishment. He developed tools and programs for various software companies over the years, holds a few patents, worked as a Test Editor for BYTE Magazine, did some legal forensics work, and more recently was a Senior Principal Engineer at BAE. According to his LinkedIn profile he’s “A career product developer - survivor of the home computer wars of the ‘80s, and recovering toy engineer who's worked on almost anything you can imagine that uses firmware or some embedded computer of some kind.”

He met his wife Emlee Kohler in 1995 while she was working on her PhD at Bowling Green University in Ohio. She moved to his home in New Hampshire the following year and they were married in 1997. In 2019 they moved to Nashua where she teaches at Rivier University and Howard was an Adjunct Faculty member at University of New Hampshire, a position he particularly enjoyed. He loved working with the upcoming tech innovators, helping them hone and advance their skills.

Among his many creative pursuits, Howard enjoyed sewing and machine embroidery, as well as working with his Cricut. He particularly enjoyed serving as director of the New Hampshire Science and Engineering Expo, which involved teaching high school students about computing, engineering, and general science. He and Emlee also served the organization as workers, judges, and project reviewers. Howard was a teacher/mentor and creator of science projects and products. One student at UNH said this about him: “Eglowstein is truly one of the best professors. He cares deeply for the success of students, and will do absolutely everything to help. His labs are easy to understand, and will give you a deep understanding of what you're working on that will
carry with you throughout the rest of your career. Even for non-Computer Science students, highly recommended!!!”

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Emlee Kohler, of Nashua, father, Ira Eglowstein, of Albany, sisters Marla Eglowstein of Albany, Sheila Conway of Seattle, WA, and 6 adult children of his sisters and Emlee’s brother, as well as his two beloved King Charles Cavlier Spaniels Murdoch and Julia.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday 22 May 2026, 11:30 am – 1 pm (doors open at 11 am) at the Old Town Hall, 10 Kendall Road, Tyngsborough, MA 01879. Please feel free to be bring a story, anecdote, and/or pictures to share about your interactions with Howard. Light brunch items and beverages will be served). Parking for the Old Town Hall is in nearby public lots.
