Schenectady – Ida Demsky Sahr, 105, died March 28, 2024 at her residence. Born in Amsterdam, NY she was the daughter of the late Harry and Bryna (Singlair) Demsky.
As a young woman she moved to Schenectady where she met and married her beloved husband Iman "Hy" Sahr. For many years Ida was the smiling face people looked forward to seeing at Loblaws Super Market.
She had been a member of Beth Israel Synagogue for over 65 years. Her involvement in the Schenectady Jewish Community included fundraising for the Schenectady JCC, Jewish Friendship Bowling League and membership in the Beth Israel Sisterhood. In addition, she was a member of The United Order of True Sisters where she worked to help establish the Schenectady Hospice Program. She was also one of the founding members of The Jacob Urowsky Fellowship Foundation in Atlanta in honor of her great-grandson.
Ida was the loving mother of Janet Sahr of Boston and Marilyn (Larry) Gordon of Schenectady; grandmother of, Brian and Debra Gordon, Amy and Todd Urowsky; great-grandmother of Aaron and Brooke Gordon, Stacy Gordon and Jake and Tyler Urowsky.
She was predeceased by her brother, Kirk Douglas; and sisters, Betty Simon, Marion Byck, Kay Goodman, Ruth Greenstein and Fritzi Becker.
Funeral services for Ida will be held at Temple Gates of Heaven, 852 Ashmore Ave. in Schenectady on Tuesday April 2nd at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Beth Israel Cemetery in Rotterdam.
