Irma Beilinson Obituary

Irma Beilinson died at her home early in the morning of February 9th, 2025, having been surrounded by family for many days. She had just turned 97 years old.

She was the daughter of the late Meyer and Yetta (Zausner) Lifshitz and the wife of the late Martin (Marty) Beilinson.

Irma was born on December 24th, 1927 In Brooklyn, New York. During the Great Depression, her family relocated to a farm in Mongaup Valley, N.Y.  She liked recalling that when the snow was deep, her father would bundle her and her beloved sister, Blossom, into the back of a horse-drawn sleigh to bring them to the local one-room schoolhouse.

When the Lifschitz family returned to Brooklyn, Irma skipped a grade in school, and later went on to graduate from Brooklyn College. After working as a dietitian at Bellevue Hospital for a short period, she returned to school to become an educator. She taught first grade, then earned a master’s degree in special education and spent many years as a resource room teacher in Far Rockaway, N.Y. She was a devoted teacher who fondly remembered her students throughout her life.

Irma enjoyed traveling with friends and cousins while working in her twenties and early thirties. She and Martin (Marty) married in 1962. They later moved from Brooklyn to Merrick, N.Y., where they raised their two children, Sharon and Jerry. Irma was part of a tight-knit community in Merrick, actively participating in the Parent-Teacher Association and developing lifelong bonds with an extremely devoted, close group of friends.

Irma and Marty were happily married for nearly 54 years, until Marty passed away in 2015. In 2019, Irma was preceded in death by her sister Blossom. Irma is survived by her two children, Sharon Beilinson (Douglas Hadjin) and Jerry Beilinson (Fran) as well as four grandchildren, Rebecca and Hannah Beilinson and Danielle and Zachary Hadjin. She was a loving aunt to Ann Miller (Henri Flikier), Jonathan Miller (Alice Nappy), and David Miller and a beloved great-aunt to all of their children.

Irma formed close relationships everywhere she went. She was grateful for the welcoming community she found in the Albany area after moving to The Beverwyck in 2019.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, February 11th at 9am at Levine Memorial Chapel in Albany, followed by a burial at Mount Hebron Cemetery in Flushing, Queens.

Donations in her name can be made to Planned Parenthood or The Hadassah Foundation.
