I was very sorry to learn of Joel's passing.  He was a volunteer in Chaplaincy Services for several years, and I visited him regularly in his last locations.  He was so committed to anything Jewish; a regular at Shul and at any discussion group or program. Since the pandemic I was doing a small Kabbalat Shabbat with him regularly. If he was awake he welcomed me; we did Kiddush and sang a few songs.  I will miss him and his commitment.  Y'hi zichro baruch.

I was the oldest and Joe was the youngest of the six first cousins on our mothers' side. He used to call me every few weeks and would always begin our conversation by asking "What's happening in your neck of the woods?"  He was one of the kindest people I knew; never with a disparaging word for anyone,  Among his volunteer activities, he visited patients at the VA hospital, including my husband in 2006. I last visited him three years ago, and he remembered his boyhood home at 103 Hollywood Avenue.  Before he needed caretakers, he was the caretaker for his elderly dog whom he showered with love.  I considered him my friend as well as my cousin and am grateful that he was part of my life for decades.

Dear Abbott and family.  I am so sad to learn of Joel's passing,  He was my Friend and Brother for many good years in the Lodge.  I would not have been in  the Lodge, had it not been for Joel and Frank C who brought me in.  He will be sorely missed.  Sincerely ,Bob Shapiro.  .
