Watervliet – Lance died on August 24, 2024 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY at the age of 77. Born in Manhattan to Annette Doris Rosenberg Nevard and David Phillip Nevard. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Peter. He’s survived by a niece Lindsay, longtime girlfriend Joan, cousins Jill (Ira), Bruce, Janet (Mac), Lynn(George) and others.
Growing up in Poughkeepsie Lance graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1964. He graduated from SUNY Albany, SUNY Purchase, Suny Hudson Valley Community College, NYC Union Carpentry School, and attended Dutchess Community College. His degrees and studies were in Computer Science, Chemistry, Carpentry, Fine Arts, Sculpture, and Drafting.
He loved the sea and racing yachts in the Bermuda Cup races and racing on his sloop, Typhoon. This was the subject of much of his photography. As a child he picked up his love for ship modeling with his Uncle Russ. Lance’s ship models were as close to perfection as possible. In fact, in 1982 the New York Times titled an article about him, “Master ‘Shipwright’ in a Vanishing Craft.” Anything he put his hands to were works of art. His masterful staircases were in multi-million-dollar homes. His sculptures, drawings likewise were a beauty to behold. He loved hiking and the outdoors with Shelly. These likewise were reflected in his professional photography. Last but not least, was his love of Chinese culture, food, language and art. Lance traveled to China twice, bringing back artwork. He assisted Chinese SUNY students with the English in their research papers. Bringing a few to family dinners in Poughkeepsie where he grew up.
Lance was talkative, friendly and loved people! He thus made many Chinese friends both there and in the US. He made friends wherever he went and wanted them to meet each other. A eclectic group of people were part of Lance’s Friday night dinners and are dedicated to each other. He was a very kind soul, as evidenced in the way he took care of his elderly mom who he respected so much.
