It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing on Tuesday, December 22, of Laurence Samuel Kaminsky, at home, surrounded by his loving family.  Born in Cape Town, South Africa, on December 25, 1940, Laurence earned his doctorate in organic chemistry at the University of Cape Town in 1966. He immigrated to the United States with his wife Sylvia and children Philip and Rena in 1975 to pursue his career as a research scientist and to raise his family in a place that better reflected his values.

Laurence was passionate about work and about life. He worked for many years as a researcher at New York State Wadsworth Laboratories, and for the past 14 years, he served as Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development at the Albany VA Medical Center.   As recently as two weeks ago, Laurence was at work, doing what he loved.  Laurence greatly enjoyed music, food, wine, art, and travel.  Each weekend, along with his wife Sylvia and friends, he could be found at a concert, play or restaurant, and several times a year, he and Sylvia travelled to some exotic location, often going on a walking tour or meeting up with his children and grandson.

Laurence felt deeply about addressing issues of inequity, hunger, and homelessness, and filled many a family Zoom call over the past year explaining the importance of empathy and compassion to his beloved grandson.  He will be deeply missed by his wife of almost 55 years, Sylvia, son Philip (Lisa), daughter Rena (Garth), grandson Joshua, brother Victor (Laraine), sister Hazel (Peter), brother-in-law Louis, and nieces and nephews.  Those wishing to remember Laurence may make contributions to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, or to a local food bank or homeless shelter.
