Lawrence Newman Obituary

Niskayuna – Lawrence A. Newman, 95, passed away on Saturday October 21, 2023. He was born in New York City on November 21, 1927. His parents were Abraham and Elsie Newman. Accepting the limited use of his left arm, he concentrated on his studies. A graduate of The Hebrew Academy of Boro Park, and New Utrecht High School, Brooklyn. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from New York University magna cum laude, in 1947. He then was employed by a national accounting firm while attending Brooklyn Law School in the evening, graduated and admitted to The New York Bar in 1950. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1951.

Mr. Newman was employed with The New York State Tax Department for 44 years retiring in 1995. He held various positions in the Department including Albany District Tax Director covering thirteen counties in the Northeast part of the state. He also served as a special assistant attorney-general with the Law Department and as a special examiner for the department of Civil Service.

While in New York City, he was active in the Civil Service Employee Association, serving as Vice President of the New York City Chapter. At that time, he was a senior special agent in The New York Tax Department’s Special Investigation Bureau.

During the Vietnam War, he was a volunteer Government Appeals Agent for the Selective Service System, evaluating claims of conscientious objectors.

Mr. Newman has been a resident of The Capital District since 1967. He served in The Niskayuna Town planning board and later chairman in the 1970’s.

He was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Shirley Newman; his step-son, Joel Lindy and by his sister, Irene Heskes.

Mr. Newman is survived by his daughter, Judith (Dr. Alvin) Ruthenberg; his daughter-in-law, Marilyn Lindy and her partner Dan DeMicco; his grandchildren; Joshua (Nicole) Lindy, Jeffrey (Gwen) Lindy, Kate (Frederick) Hartman, Michael (Dr. Tierney) Trossman; eight great-grandchildren; his niece, Deborah (Dr. Alan) Kraut; his nephew, Walter Heskes; and great-niece, Dr. Julia Kraut.

Funeral services for Mr. Newman will be held at Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117Union St., on Sunday October 22nd at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in the Agudat Achim Cemetery
