Lawrence "Larry" Rickman Obituary

Albany - Lawrence B. Rickman “Larry” 98, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, with loved ones by his side.

Born in Troy on June 25, 1926, Larry resided most of his life in Albany. He was the middle son of the late Louis and Mildred (Goodman) Rickman. Larry graduated early from Albany High School and proudly enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II as a petty officer second class. He served his country from 1944-1946. Upon discharge from the Navy, Larry attended Siena College on the GI Bill. He didn’t graduate and instead hit the pavement as a salesman selling aluminum siding and creating his own business called Lawrence Aluminum. He moved on to selling windows before opening Mayflower Brokers Insurance Agency in 1966. Larry owned and operated Mayflower Brokers with his friend Mike Greenberg until he finally retired in 2007 at the age of 81.

For many years, Larry enjoyed spending the winter months in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with his wife Sydelle. The two also enjoyed summer vacations to Gloucester, Massachusetts., and Moody Beach, Maine with their children and grandchildren. There, he enjoyed long walks, dips in the ocean, and lots of lobsters.  Larry loved dabbling in the stock market, investing wisely, and doling out financial advice to friends and family. He prided himself on their financial successes if they followed his lead. Larry was known for taking long walks every day, no matter what the weather, up and down Hackett Blvd. and New Scotland Ave. for many years until recent months when his legs began to fail him. In addition to his daily walks, he enjoyed daily trips to the grocery store, reading the Wall Street Journal every day, evening martinis with Sydelle, and savoring every morsel of a good meal ever so slowly. Larry was a devoted congregant of Congregation Beth Abraham Jacob where he attended religious services regularly and served as a board member for many years.

In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased in death by his devoted wife Sydelle to whom he was married for 59 years before her passing this past Thanksgiving, and by his older brother Herman. He is survived by his daughters Laura (Matthew) Hosford of Delmar, and Wendi Rickman (Jonathan Broth) of Glen Ridge, NJ; his beloved grandchildren Merrick and Phoebe Hosford, Sabrina Broth, and Tyler Conway; his younger brother Alvin and sister-in-law Patricia; and his nieces and nephews who got a big kick out of their Uncle Larry.

Larry’s family is forever grateful for the devotion, love, and care both he and Sydelle received for many years from an amazing group of women- Claudia, Donnett, Amy, Arlene, Oneika, and Marie.
