Lawrence J. Schechter Obituary

LOUDONVILLE, NEW YORK

Lawrence J. Schechter, of Loudonville, NY, passed away suddenly at St. Peter’s Hospital on February 4, 2025 after a brief illness. Larry was born on November 21, 1950 in Albany as the middle child of the late Samuel and Henrietta (Sutin) Schechter. He was close to his late in-laws, Estelle and Sanford Jaffee, who loved him like a son. He graduated from Albany High School in 1968 and the University of Brockport in 1972. He later got a second degree from Russell Sage Evening Division in 1981.

Larry met his wife Linda at the Jewish Community Center when they were both camp counselors in 1969. They were married in July 1974, and recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They enjoyed daily walks, going out to eat by themselves or with family and friends, vacationing in Cape Cod, and their subscription to Proctor’s Theater. And he loved going to the movies, even if it was just by himself.

Larry was employed at Manufacturers Hanover Bank and Marine Midland Bank (which became HSBC), and retired in 2011. All his co-workers and business associates had great respect for him, as he had a strong work ethic, was very organized, discreet, amiable, and dedicated. After retirement, he organized a monthly luncheon with several of his former co-workers. He was president of the Independent Benevolent Society for several years, helping the organization and the cemetery grounds thrive.

Larry is survived by his wife Linda (Bernstein) Schechter, sons Brian Schechter of Jersey City and Andrew Schechter of Latham, and brothers Martin (Marjorie) Schechter of Colonie and Howard (Dale) Schechter of Loudonville. He was the brother-in-law of Susan and David Smith of Wantagh, and Lea and Sanford Caplan of Great Neck. He was the adored uncle of Brianna (Dan) Smith, Danielle Smith, Evan Caplan, Seth Caplan, Lauren Schechter, Samantha (Kyle) Cunningham, Tracy Schechter, Robyn DeLeo, Heather Berezansky, and great-uncle to Emery, Anna, Allie, Jesse, Jackson, and Max. He was considered an uncle to Agija, Aaron, Addison, and Anderson VanDerwiel, as well as many others.

Services at Congregation Beth Emeth 100 Academy Road in Albany on Friday, February 7, 2025 at 10:00am. Interment will follow services at the Independent Benevolent Cemetery on Fuller Road in Albany.

The family wants to thank the nurses, staff, and doctors at St. Peter’s Hospital for their kindness, professionalism, and caring to both Larry and Linda during his brief stay.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Alzheimer’s Association, or to the charity of your choice.
