Albany - Leila Sontz Lipman, 100 years old, passed peacefully at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home on Friday, October 25, 2024. She was born on July 3, 1924 to Anne and Myer Sontz in Albany, where she lived her entire life. She was a graduate of The Milne School and the New York State College for Teachers. She worked at the Welfare Department, as well as family businesses Snappy Men’s Shop and Dad & Lad. She did volunteer work for Call for Action, Capital Repertory Theatre and the NYS Theatre Institute. She was member of Temple Israel and a life member of Hadassah. She enjoyed writing poetry for personal occasions.
Leila was married to Philip Fred Lipman until his passing in 2008. She is survived by her children Paul (Sue) of Lakewood Ranch, FL, Richard (Sandy) of Loudonville and Lori Calka (Akiva) of Albany, and her sister Marcia Schaefer (Richard) of Delmar. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Benjamin (Meegan) of Denver, CO, Alison (Oleg) of Pleasant Valley, NY, Sharon, of Waltham, MA, and Adam (Stacey), of Haverhill, MA as well as her great grandchildren, Layla, Mason, Sophia and Sam. She was predeceased by her sister Rita Schneider. She is also survived by nieces, as well as great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to The Daughters of Sarah Nursing staff on the Red Unit for their extraordinary care and compassion given to Leila throughout her stay.
The family suggests that donations be made to Hadassah or Daughters of Sarah.
Funeral services for Leila will be held on Monday October 28th at 11:00 am at Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave.in Albany. Burial will follow at Temple Israel Cemetery.
Shiva will be held at Rich and Sandy Lipman's Home on Monday and Tuesday from 1:00 - 4:00 pm and 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Thereafter at Lori and Akiva Calka's home at the same hours.
