Leonard Martin Gaines, 65 of Colonie, NY died on Monday, September 27, 2021 at the Livingston Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Livingston, NY after a brief battle with cancer.

Lenny was born in Brooklyn, NY and was raised in East Meadow, New York. He was a graduate of RPI, Class of 1978, and later earned his PhD from RPI as well.

He was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity. Lenny had been employed by NYS as a statistician for the Department of Labor and later the Department of Economic Development. He was a member of the American Statistical Association and a longtime member of Congregation Berith Sholom in Troy. Lenny was a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism   where he met his loving wife Nancy.  He was a member of the Schenectady Curling Club and was an undefeated cribbage player

Lenny is survived by his wife, Nancy Labitt Gaines and a daughter, Julie Louise Gaines of Colonie. He also leaves his Mother, Babette Gaines of Commack, NY and a brother, David (Jane) Gaines of Centerport, NY, as well as several cousins.

Services at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Ridgewood, NY on Thursday, September 30, 2021.  Those wishing to remember Lenny in a special way may make a memorial contribution to Congregation Berith Sholom. 167 Third Street Troy, NY. 12180, the American Cancer Society 1 Penny Lane, Latham, NY 12110 or the American Diabetes Association, 2 Pine West Plaza, Albany, NY 12205. The period of mourning will be observed at Congregation Berith Sholom in Troy on Sunday October 3, 2021 from 2-4pm.
