Martha L. Healy Obituary

Albany - Martha Louise Healy, December 30, 1954 – October 9, 2024, grew up in New Rochelle, Chicago, and Rochester, New York. She graduated from SUNY Oswego with a BA in English. She loved literature and poetry and occupied her spare time reading, writing, gardening, and exploring the outdoors. She moved to Albany, New York and parlayed her affinity for languages and logic into a successful, decades-long career in computer programming and system analysis with various county and state agencies. She and her husband bought a house that they fixed up and in which they were married and raised three children, and in which she died.

Martha was a gifted writer, award-winning poet, and Sudoku master, but she would never admit it. An intuitive cook, she would consult three or four recipes, put the cookbooks away, and then turn out a delicious dish of her own creation. She orchestrated multi-course Passover seders and legendary Chanukah latke parties with everything made from scratch (including the horseradish and applesauce).

In more recent years, due to the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, she had to quit her job supervising the grading of statewide exams, then stop volunteering at Temple Israel’s weekly Bingo. She later had to quit cooking, then driving, then reading, then using utensils, then watching movies and TV shows.

Predeceased by her parents, Louise Caring and William Healy, step-father, Joseph McGurn, and older brother, Daniel Healy, Martha is survived by her husband of only 43 years, Sandor Schuman, children Benjamin Schuman (Sarah Maurer), Samuel Schuman (Emlyn Clark), and Anna Schuman, siblings Molly Healy, Sarah Healy-Whelden (Richard Whelden), and Christopher Healy, and step-sisters Eileen McGurn and Bridget Shaw (Ron).

The funeral will take place at 12:30 pm, Thursday, October 10, 2024 at the Temple Israel Cemetery, 1620 Western Ave, Albany, NY 12203, and online at Click here for Funeral Service Livestream
