Nancy Beth (Lederman) Nemeth, 58, of Guilderland, passed away at Albany Medical Center after a brief illness on January 31, 2023.
Nancy’s path through life reflected all that is good in the human spirit. Her kindness, humility and devotion to family and public service embodied the ideal of living and working towards something greater than oneself.
She is survived by her loving husband Frank and children Victoria and Donald, the two prides of her life, and to whom she devoted every fiber of her being.
In a career in New York State government that spanned nearly four decades and included service in the Executive, Judicial and Legislative branches, Nancy mentored scores of individuals interested in public service as they sought to find their fit in government. Her example of compassion, strength and competence in the workplace, all the while promoting the joy of helping the common good stands as an example to all.
Nancy Beth Lederman was born October 28, 1964, in New York City, the daughter of Donald I. and Elaine I. (Jackson) Lederman. Nancy, along with brother Brian and sister and best friend Susan, spent their early years in Bellmore N.Y. before moving to Rockville Centre. Nancy attended Southside High School where she co-Captained the tennis team. She spent summers at sleep-away camp in the Berkshires and enjoyed traveling with her family, particularly visits to her grandparents in Miami Beach.
Nancy attended Hofstra University and graduated with a degree in Political Science following an internship at the New York Department of State. This work affirmed her love of public service and set her on a career course in Albany N.Y., first with the Department of State, then at the State Capitol in the Executive Chamber with Gov. Mario M. Cuomo.
Nancy married Frank P. Nemeth in May, 1996 in a lively ceremony at the Glen Sanders Mansion in Scotia N.Y. The couple lived in Albany’s Pine Bush where both Victoria and Donald were born, before moving to Guilderland. Anyone who had the pleasure of spending time with Nancy knows Victoria and Donald were the essence of her life. Stories of Victoria on the soccer pitch and Donald on the baseball diamond flowed effortlessly and lovingly, particularly as the near year-round schedule of weekend family journeys to out-of-town tournaments became routine.
An avid dog lover, Nancy held particular affection for Elsa, her Pembroke Welsh Corgi who was small in stature but giant in personality, and Noodles, a rescue discovered by Victoria and Donald that took to the family so quickly there was a question of who rescued who.
Nancy was a lifelong, fervent New York Mets fan who upon marrying Frank adopted the Buffalo Bills. One of her greatest joys was taking her children to a Mets game at Citifield, and she was never shy about describing her favorite Mets moment - attendance at Shea Stadium for Game 6 of the 1986 World Series.
Nancy’s other passion outside of home and work was music. She was a regular attendee at any James Taylor or Jackson Browne performance in the area, traveled to see Billy Joel in Madison Square Garden and a Springsteen show would be the highlight of any season.
Other survivors include Nancy’s mother, Elaine (Jackson) Lederman, sister Susan Lederman, brother Brian (Monica) Lederman and nephew Zachary (Elizabeth) Lederman. Other survivors include mother-in-law Jeanne P. (Frank) Nemeth, brother-in-law Bob (Tammy) Nemeth, niece Samantha (Jake) Gajkowski and her sons Jax and Chase. Also, sister-in-law Lynn (Andy) Von Hassel and their sons Herman and Frankie.
Nancy was predeceased by her father, Donald I. Lederman, father-in-law Frank Nemeth and maternal grandparents Victoria Engel Jackson and Samuel Jackson, as well as paternal grandparents Abraham Lederman and Gladys Lederman.
The family would like to thank Mark and Jane at Levine Memorial Chapel for the special care and attention they provided in helping us bring Nancy home.
A Celebration of Nancy’s Life will be held in the Spring of 2023 at a site and date TBD. The event will be filled with pictures, music, videos and laughter, a joyful gathering worthy of Nancy, reflecting her imprint on all those fortunate enough to be in her presence.
