Richard J. Bergman

November 12, 1946 ~ February 6, 2023 (age 76) 76 Years Old

Obituary

Richard  J. Bergman, 76, passed away suddenly on Monday, February 6, 2023. Born in New York City on November 12, 1946, he is the son of the late Leonard and Nettie Bergman.

Richard graduated from Francis Lewis High School in Queens, New York in 1964. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Hunter College in 1968 and his dental degree from New York University in 1972.

Richard met his wife, Barbara, in high school at age 15. A member of Mu Sigma fraternity, Richard was introduced to Barbara by his matchmaker cousin, who was also Barbara’s friend and sorority sister. The two married in 1968 and relocated to the Capital District in 1973. They spent 54 years by each other’s side building a family and life together.

Upon moving to upstate New York, Richard began working at Family Dentistry, where he soon became a partner and later a solo practitioner of the Troy, New York practice. Until his retirement in 2019, he was beloved by his patients and staff due to the exceptional and gentle care he provided, as well as his friendly demeanor and quick wit.

Residing in Clifton Park and Boynton Beach, Florida, Richard and Barbara had a wide circle of dear friends. He was an avid reader, sports fan (Go Giants!), and lover of music. In his later years, Richard enjoyed playing golf with his friends, spending time with his grandchildren, attending their activities, performances, sporting events, and school activities, and perpetually watching Fox News. He will be remembered for his love of family, loyalty to his friends, his passion and exuberance for politics, and his enduring sense of humor.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Bergman; his children, Jennifer (John) Ellinwood, Melissa (Derek) Squire, and Michael (Beth) Bergman; his adoring grandchildren, Jackson Ellinwood, Sam Ellinwood, Rachel Squire, Jacob Squire, Emma Bergman, Ari Bergman and Max Bergman. He is also survived by his niece, Felicia Hornstein Fonseca, and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his sister, Helaine Bergman Hornstein.
