Richard Steven Mendelson, 82, of Schenectady, NY has rejoined his fellow camp counselor and wife Marlene in heaven after a brave battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was predeceased by his parents Michael and Gussie Mendelson and his sister Deborah Roos. He is survived by his children Elliot (Cara) Mendelson, Suzanne (Robert) Austenfeld, Mitchell (Kathleen) Mendelson, grandchildren Samuel (Cassandra) Van Kuren, Robert (Hayle) Van Kuren, Hannah, Matthew, and Madeline Mendelson, one greatgrandchild, a special cousin Carol (Stuart) Cohen, a beloved brother-in-law Jay (Fern) Levine, and many nieces and nephews.
Richard was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was quietly proud of the engineering work he did for the Mercury Space Program, for GE Steam Turbines, and on nuclear powered submarines at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory where he retired from in 2003. His fondness of camping, cross country skiing, and a good campfire was passed down to his children and grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Agudat Achim Cemetery in Rotterdam , NY on Monday, March 22nd at 2 pm . Masks and social distancing will be required.
Donations in Richard’s memory may be made to Daughters of Sarah Jewish Foundation, Congregation Agudat Achim , or Congregation Gates of Heaven.
