Richard Mendelson

1938 - 2021

Niskayuna, New York

Richard Steven Mendelson, 82, of Schenectady, NY has rejoined his fellow camp counselor and wife Marlene in heaven after a brave battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was predeceased by his parents Michael and Gussie Mendelson and his sister Deborah Roos. He is survived by his children Elliot (Cara) Mendelson, Suzanne (Robert) Austenfeld, Mitchell (Kathleen) Mendelson, grandchildren Samuel (Cassandra) Van Kuren, Robert (Hayle) Van Kuren, Hannah, Matthew, and Madeline Mendelson, one greatgrandchild, a special cousin Carol (Stuart) Cohen, a beloved brother-in-law Jay (Fern) Levine, and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was quietly proud of the engineering work he did for the Mercury Space Program, for GE Steam Turbines, and on nuclear powered submarines at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory where he retired from in 2003. His fondness of camping, cross country skiing, and a good campfire was passed down to his children and grandchildren.

My condolences to you on your dad's passing.  I was honored to get to know him in his last couple of years.  He would come to services and to my discussion groups, and while he was mostly quiet, when he spoke it was always gently and thoughtfully.  I stopped in last Friday to do our Kiddush Service.  His eyes were mostly closed, but I said "Shabbat Shalom" and he mouthed the words back.  I will miss him. T'hi nishmato tz'rurah bi'tzror Hahayyim - may his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

My favorite mental picture of your Dad is his big smile when we rode on the Merry-go-round at the Park in Binghamton. I am sending my love to all of you. May his memory be a blessing.

We extend heartfelt sympathy to your family.  We were neighbors with Lois and Dick (across the street) over 30 years.  We have fond memories of exchanging stories about our children and sharing waves during our seasonal raking.  We bought their camper and gave it to our parents who enjoyed it tremendously.

They were wonderful neighbors.

Dear Elliot, Suzanne and Mitchell,

Please accept my sincere sympathy on the loss of your Dad.   We shared Indian Guides,
Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, some camping and seders over many years.  I knew him as a modest,
patient and caring husband and father.  I'm sorry I can't join you for his funeral.

May his memory be for a blessing,
Ellen (Blake)
