Samuel Lefkowitz, age 90, most recently of Newton, MA and a longtime resident of Niskayuna, NY passed away on December 30, 2024. He was born August 21, 1934, in Red Bank, New Jersey, the son of the late Meyer and Celia Lefkowitz. He graduated from Red Bank High School. He received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Newark College of Engineering in 1956. He served from 1956 – 1959 as a Lieutenant in the US Air Force at Wright Patterson Air Base. He then received a MS in 1960 and PhD in 1964, in Mechanical Engineering from the Ohio State University where he also taught and was a research associate. In 1961 he married Elaine Berkman of Canton, Ohio. He was employed by General Electric in the Missile and Space Division in Valley Forge, PA from 1964 to 1972. He was then employed as a manager by General Electric at MAO in Schenectady, NY from 1972 until his retirement in 1994.
He served as a treasurer, board member and chairman of the investment committee of Congregation Agudat Achim in Niskayuna. He was a volunteer driver for Jewish Family Services and a volunteer at the SICM food pantry in Schenectady. He was a secretary and treasurer for the B’Nai Brith Housing Company in Niskayuna.
He was predeceased by his wife Elaine, in 2008. In addition, he was predeceased by his brothers, Jack and Philip.
Sam was a loving and generous father and grandfather called “Zadeh”. He is survived by his son, Michael (Adina) of Sands Point, NY and daughters, Susan (Richard) of Brookline, MA and Ellen (Paul) of Needham, MA and grandchildren, Zachary, Abigail and Noah Sprinsky, Emily Snyder and Ava and Solenne Lefkowitz.
A private burial will be held at the synagogue cemetery on Schermerhorn Road. Memorial contributions can be made to Congregation Agudat Achim in Niskayuna, NY, Alzheimer’s Association, Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
