Chicago - Sarah Fox passed away peacefully on June 6, 2025, surrounded by her children, six weeks shy of her 103rd birthday. A woman of uncommon warmth, compassion and humor, she was beloved by a wide circle of extended family and friends.
Sarah was born in Troy and raised in Albany. She graduated from Philip Schuyler High School. She was a bookkeeper at Sherry’s department store before she married Arthur Fox in 1948. Together they ran the Fox Shop clothing store on Central Avenue, and were active members of Temple Israel. They had three children - Alan (Diane) and Jeffrey (Amy), both of San Francisco), and Shelley (Tom), of Chicago. Sarah was the default hostess of all the neighborhood kids, welcoming them with cookies and other treats. Most holidays were celebrated at the Fox household and out-of-town relatives were always welcome to stay. After retiring in 1984, they split time between Albany and West Palm Beach, FL. They enjoyed traveling, visiting Israel several times in addition to Europe and Hawaii.
Following Art’s passing in 2003, Sarah moved to Chicago in 2004, starting a new life with new friends and a new community, where she became a popular volunteer leader of exercise classes and bingo games and a member of the choral group.
In addition to her children and their spouses, she is survived by six adoring grandchildren - Alexandra (Portland), Zachary (New York City), Darrah (New Orleans) and Joey, Jackson and Jordan (all of Chicago). She was predeceased by her siblings Morris (Gladys), Lillian (Abe), Zelda (Dave) and Herbert (Jeanette).
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 10th at 2:00 pm at The Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave. in Albany.
Donations can be made in Sarah’s name to Hillel, Hadassah or the charity of your choice.
