Selma Shireen Heflich age 96, died tragically from Covid-19 complications at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany, NY on January 9, 2021. She was born December 20, 1924 and was the daughter of the late Morris and Mildred Zaretzky in Brooklyn, NY.
Selma recently moved to the Massry Residence and was looking forward to this next stage of her life with family and friends. Her life revolved around her beloved family and many friends and she enjoyed socializing, playing Mah Jongg and cooking. She will be remembered for the sumptuous meals she prepared for the Jewish Holidays where family and friends would gather around the table. She had a devoted group of friends, including her dearest friend Gloria Herkowitz, who was a constant support throughout her life especially after the death of her husband, Melvin D. Heflich on January 7, 1988. She was also predeceased by her sister, Shirley.
Selma is survived by her loving children, Lois (Judd) Suresky of Guilderland, NY, Gail (Russell) Kaphan of Alford, MA and Gary (Toby) Heflich of Cherry Hill, New Jersey. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jody (Michael) Carle, Joshua (Leigh) Suresky, Ariel (Bill) Fitzpatrick, David (Leah Barish) Kaphan, Benjamin (Jill Dusseault) Kaphan and Michael Heflich. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Jack, Grant, Chace, Remi and most recently thrilled at the arrival of Frances Ruth. in addition to many nieces and nephews
A graveside service will be held on Monday January 11 at 2:00pm at Congregation Beth Emeth Cemetery for family due to Covid-19 restrictions
