Selma Newman Obituary

Selma Newman, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully at Schuyler Ridge Nursing Home on February 18, 2021 at the age of 97.

Born in Geneva, Florida, Selma was a friend to all. No one was a stranger in her home, as she always had a smile on her face and an ear to listen. Despite her love of the Florida sunshine, Selma moved to upstate NY to be close to her family, whom she loved dearly and who loved her dearly in return. She was a world traveler, setting foot in all seven continents during her life. She loved playing cards, especially Bridge, and was devoted to caring for children and animals through volunteer work with various foundations. She touched the lives of all who met her, and will be remembered for her kindness, laughter, and love of others.

Selma was predeceased by her son, Daniel Newman and sisters, Louise Lafontaine and Rose Edith Jacobson.

She leaves behind daughter Sheila Torncello (Frank) of Scotia, NY and son William Newman (Linda) of Rexford, NY; her four grandchildren, Laura Newman, Elizabeth Newman (Heather), Zachary Torncello, and Rebecca Torncello; her great-grand daughter, Charlotte Newman; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to  The Foundation for Orange County Public Schools, www.foundationforocps.org, to continue Selma’s passion for caring for others.
