Sheila Anne Sandman Gordon, known as “Sandy” to her family and friends, passed away September 15, 2022 at the age of 82 after a brief illness. She was born May 12, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York where she grew up with loving parents and a doting older sister. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brooklyn College, then attended Cornell Law School, where she was only one of three women in her graduating class. She was very proud of her lifelong career with the State Department of Audit & Control in Albany, New York. She was also a very proud Brooklyn Dodgers-turned-Mets fan.
Sheila lived a very active life. She raised a wonderful daughter, Alicia who blessed her with two terrific grandsons, Zachary and Joshua. She found love later in life with her husband, Gene Wells, with whom she loved spending time – whether it was square dancing, taking long walks, or enjoying a quiet meal together. Sheila and her sister Libby were very close their entire lives (despite a ten-year age difference) and would talk long distance on the phone for hours. She enjoyed sewing, exercise and traveling to family gatherings, and never missed a wedding, bar mitzvah, or other life event. She loved to give gifts and her favorite pastime was to send eight wrapped Hanukkah gifts to her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her other favorite tradition was hosting her beloved cousin Ruth in upstate New York, where they crammed numerous activities into a one to two week visit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mae and Joseph Sandman; her sister and brother-in-law, Libby and Walter Hachenburg; and lifelong best friend, Harriet Cohen. She is survived by her loving husband, Gene Wells and his daughters, Sandy and Sue Wells, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; her daughter, Alicia Gordon and grandsons, Zachary and Joshua Ethridge; her niece, Barbara Brounes and nephews, Richard and Mark Hachenburg; and many cousins, in particular Ruth Babbitz with whom she shared a special bond.
A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Wellwood Cemetery, 1400 Wellwood Avenue, West Babylon, New York, 11704.
