Sherry “Ris” Tanzman passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 68.
Ris was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and grew up in Laurelton, Queens. Her family spent summers in the Catskill Mountains where at 16 she met the love of her life, Bonnim, though she didn’t realize it at the time. They married nine years later and had two beautiful daughters, Jessica and Sheera, who were each the love of her life surpassed only by her granddaughter, Arianna.
Ris graduated from Queens College with dual degrees in Psychology and Anthropology and spent her career at the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance where she had many friends. Ris was a longtime member of CBAJ and a life-long coffee connoisseur. Her hobbies included reading every book she could find, writing, drawing, and the blues.
Ris is pre-deceased by her parents, Gus and Sylvia Fisher, and survived by her husband, Bonnim, daughters, Jessica Tanzman (Terry Rizzo), Sheera (Jared) Shaker, her granddaughter, Arianna and brothers, Michael Fisher and Ari (Andrea) Fisher, and a large extended family.
Her sense of humor and zany antics will be greatly missed by everyone lucky enough to have experienced the best of her.
The family would like to thank the members of NYOH and the Albany Community Hospice office for their unending patience and support during a difficult time.
