It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Daitch on September 9, 2023, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family.
Shirley was born in New Haven, Connecticut on January 23, 1926. She was a member of the United States Cadet Nurse Corp from 1943-1946. Her training for the Corp was at Grace Hospital School of Nursing in New Haven, CT. In 1954, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Bridgeport, CT.
She met her husband while she was a nurse at Yale New Haven Hospital, and he was a professor of physics at Yale University. Upon her husband’s acceptance of a position to teach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, they moved to Troy, NY and raised a family. Shirley continued her nursing career as a Registered Nurse at Samaritan Hospital and later as a nursing instructor at Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing. As a teacher, she touched the lives of many students. After retiring in 1991, she pursued her passions for painting, knitting, reading, and travel.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Professor Paul Daitch, and her brother Dr. Marvin Miller.
Shirley is survived by her three children, Susan Daitch, Amy (Neil) Rosenstrauch, Cheryl Daitch; her grandchildren, Paul, Helena (Raphael), Nissim; and great grandchild, Samson.
Shirley was a member of Temple Beth El of Troy, and a lifetime member of Hadassah. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Shirley’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be held privately for the family. Shiav will be held Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday at 7:30PM at Shirley's home at 5 Glenkill Road.
