Shirley Goldberg Obituary

.

Shirley Goldberg, our dear mother, was born in Albany on November 13, 1921, daughter of Adolph (Ed) and Anna (Solomon) Shogaun and died peacefully on April 8, 2022, at 100+ years old. She was predeceased by her husband, and love of her life, Morton Goldberg, on December 16,1981, and by her sister Mildred Lozoff.

She is survived by her son, Paul Goldberg, wife Sara (Sally) of Delmar, New York, and her daughter, Rhoda Carroll, husband Tim Joslyn of East Montpelier, Vermont; her sister-in-law Phyllis Ross (Shirley's beloved friend and ally for 75 years); grandchildren, Matthew Goldberg of AuSable Forks, New York; Lisa Jones, husband Mike, and great grandson Max of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Abby Ravski, husband Evan and great grandsons Judah, Asher, Rafi, and Gabi of Charleston, South Carolina. She lived long enough to hold five great-grandsons in her arms.

Shirley was a graduate of Albany Public Schools and Albany Business College. She retired, as a medical secretary from the NYS health department.

Shirley had a zest for life. She embraced learning new things and had a natural curiosity that took her on many adventures throughout her life. Shirley was an accomplished artist, dancer, seamstress, organ player, writer, cook and great listener! One of her proudest accomplishments was writing the family history and passing down these stories to her children and grandchildren, preserving them for generations to come. Most of all, Shirley was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and good friend to all who knew her.

She truly loved her family and did whatever she could to make their lives easier. One of her favorite sayings was, “Take time to smell the roses,” and she made sure we all had the time to do that. She had the gift of making everyone in her life feel special from the moment they met her. Shirley was blessed with the ability to find contentment in life and to accept all the changes and stages of her life with humility and grace. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Her family would like to thank the entire staff at Daughters of Sarah for their wonderful care of Shirley over the last seven years. A very extra special thanks to Roz, Navi, Connie, Danielle, and Sandy for their constant and loving care of our dear mother.

Shirley was a lifelong member of Temple Israel and a member of their sisterhood. She enjoyed Israeli Dance and temple services and activities. She was a life member of Hadassah and received great pleasure in supporting Jewish and Israel focused organizations.
