Stanley Harris Obituary

Schenectady - Stanley J.  Harris passed away on Monday , August 22, 2022, at The Pines Nursing Home in Glens Falls. He was 79. Stan moved there during the height of the Pandemic, and he didn’t see any family for 7 months.

Stan worked in the Schenectady Public School system for 20 years, teaching middle school health and science. Following his teaching career, Stan developed a keen interest in auctioneering and went for a certification in 1983.  As an avid collector of books, videos and anything else he could put his hands on, he quickly filled warehouses, garages, our attic and basement.  He also had a huge van which became his mobile warehouse, and he quickly acquired the moniker of “Stan, the man with the big tan van”. Garage “sale-ing” was his favorite pastime.

Stan really enjoyed traveling with Barby, his wife of nearly 40 years, especially when they went around the country for auctioneering seminars.  A favorite trip was to Israel, a few years after his diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease.  Shortly after that trip, Stan became symptomatic and travel was more limited, but he still pursued.

Stan graduated with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Union College and attended NYU for Dentistry for 2 years before discovering that dentistry was not a good fit.

Stan was a long-time member of Congregation Agudat Achim, the Men’s Club, and was a retired rooster of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

He leaves behind to mourn him, his beloved wife, Barbara Wallach Harris, his daughter Tiffany Harris of Schenectady and brother Fred (Laura) Harris of West Palm Beach, FL. and a nephew, niece and 3 great nieces as well as the mother of Tiffany, Judy (Ken Clements). Stan was predeceased by his parents and dearest friends, Della and Ira Gilman.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at 1 PM at Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Union St., with interment immediately following in the Agudat Achim Cemetery on Schermerhorn Street in Rotterdam.

Shiva will be in person at the Harris residence on Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6-8:30 PM with a service at 7:15. It is requested that all in person attendees for shiva wear a mask.   It will also be available via Zoom.   Shiva minyanim will continue via Zoom only on Sunday and Monday evenings at 7:15.
