Susan Harriet Shapiro, PhD, 65, of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away from a neurological event on Wednesday afternoon, June 7, 2023, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital with her loving family and close friends by her side.
One of two siblings, she was born in Albany, New York on September 21, 1957, to Samuel Shapiro and Elsie Golderman, of blessed memory.
Survivors include her wife, Stella Jeanne Morris; son, Zachary Hoelzle; brother, Dr. Barry Shapiro; their adorable fur-baby Lexi Grace; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was known for her beauty, elegance, resilience, generosity, and her capacity to love deeply. She began her academic journey at Binghamton University, culminating in a PhD from Florida State University in Clinical Psychology. She impacted thousands of lives in her clinical work, most recently at Florida State University's Counseling Center. She used the wisdom learned through her deeply spiritual life - as she was inspired by both the Jewish and Christian faiths to heal everyone around her from, clients, friends, family, neighbors, and even strangers. She was a talented artist and fabulous gourmet who delighted in hosting illustrious dinner parties and beautiful holiday celebrations.
Some pastimes that filled her soul with joy included: creating forever memories with her friends and family, and exploring the meaning of life through travel, gardening, cooking, knitting, reading, exercise, art, and getting the 'Final Jeopardy' question correct.
The graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 9, 2023, at Tallahassee Memory Gardens in the Garden of the Christus at the Abbey Funeral Home 4037 N. Monroe St Tallahassee, FL 323303; (850) 363-1686
