Sydna Schwartz

December 30, 2021

On Thursday December 30th 2021, beloved, well-renowned and exemplary community leader, organizer, friend, teacher, colleague, wife and mother - Sydna Schwartz - joined her mother and brother Marion Frank and Barry Gelfin at peace in the great beyond.

A beach baby who excelled in the extraordinary from birth, winning Atlantic City’s Most Beautiful Baby Contest on the legendary Steel Pier as a three-year-old, she pursued higher education at UCLA, Temple University and UPenn. Through her work at the Philadelphia Police Dept. Crime Lab, Fernald State Hospital in Waltham Massachusetts, and teaching preschool and afterschool programs in the South Colonie School District (which she may have found the most satisfying), she was always dedicated to serving the greater good while using her strengths to support her family.

Her impossibly natural charm, candor, and charisma attracted and embraced perfect strangers, creating community wherever she went and with whomever she spoke, from the gracious and supportive medical staff she made laugh in her final days, to her lifelong loyal and loving friends, contributions to the community of Congregation Gates of Heaven, Hadassah, South Colonie Schools, and far beyond.  She was proud of her efforts to extend Civil Rights to all peoples.

She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Herb, and children who work to honor her legacy, Marna and Ross Schwartz.

There will be a memorial service in her honor in February.

Those wishing to remember Sydna in a special way may make a memorial donation to the Hadassah Medical Organization, Donor Services, PO Box 1100, New York, New York 10268-1100, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts 02215 or Congregation Gates of Heaven 852 Ashmore Avenue Schenectady, New York 12309.
